Understand

My sister-in-law was posted to a remote school. The students have only very basic knowledge of English.

It is a culture for students to stand and greet the teacher when the teacher walks into the class to teach.

“Good morning/good evening teacher.”

They will stand again when the teacher is ready to leave the class when lesson ends and say “ Thank you teacher”.

As a teacher and teaching English subject, my sister-in-law wants to make sure the student can absorb what she’s teaching.

On the first day of teaching after finishing one lesson, she asked the students,

“Students , do you understand me?”

The whole class stand up and say, “Thank you teacher”.

My sister-in-law ask them to sit and asked them again ,

“Do you understand”.

Again the students stand up and say, “Thank you teacher”.

Then it struck her of what happened. To the students, once they heard the word “stand” they will stand and wish the teacher.

My sister-in-law then started giving them extra class

Results:

Two of her students (after six years of extra teaching) was sent to London to further their studies on government scholarship. She sent them to the airport feeling happy and proud.

CIKGUTANYA: If the two boys read this blog, BRAVO!!
